In 1946, Robert Coates used the term “Abstract Expressionism” in The New Yorker while reviewing a Hans Hofmann exhibition. Although the phrase had surfaced more than once before in the 20th century, Coates’s usage became the most influential, and it now refers to the output of a diverse group of New York artists in the 1940s and 1950s. Their technical approaches to art were quite varied, but their paintings were all “abstract,” and to varying degrees, “expressive.”
Can you identify these 10 iconic paintings from ten of the Abstract Expressionists?
Who did this painting? What is it called?
